Do you keep drawing until you can play in UNO?
No. If you can't play, you draw a single card. If that card can be played, you may put it down right away; if not, your turn ends and play moves on. Drawing until you find a playable card is a house rule.
The rule:
No. In UNO, if you can’t play you draw a single card and may play it right away if it fits; if it doesn’t, you keep it and your turn ends. Drawing until you find a playable card is a house rule.
- No match? Draw 1 card from the draw pile.
- Does it fit? If the drawn card matches by color, number or symbol, or it’s a Wild, you may play it immediately (a Wild Draw 4 only if you hold no card of the current color).
- Doesn’t fit? Keep it. Your turn ends.
If the draw pile runs out before anyone goes out, reshuffle the discard pile to make a new draw pile and keep playing.
Example:
The top card is a green 4 and Ana has no green cards, no 4s and no Wilds. She draws one card, a blue 9, which doesn't match, so she keeps it and her turn is over.
Why players argue about it:
Many groups play draw-until-you-can-play, which makes hands balloon fast. The official rule is just one card.
