Can you draw a card even if you have a playable card in UNO?
Yes. You may choose not to play and draw a card instead. If the drawn card can be played, you may play it right away, but you can't play any other card from your hand that turn.
The rule:
Yes, in UNO you can choose not to play a playable card and draw one from the draw pile instead, but then only the card you just drew can be played that turn, and only if it fits.
- Holding back is allowed. You don’t have to play a playable card.
- The cost: you must draw a card from the draw pile instead.
- After drawing: only the card you just drew can be played that turn, and only if it fits. Everything else in your hand waits.
A regular Wild, or a customizable card, may also be played even when you hold another playable card.
Example:
The top card is yellow. Kai could play a yellow 2, but he's saving it. He draws instead and gets a yellow Skip, which he plays. He can't also play the yellow 2 that turn.
Why players argue about it:
Some players think you must play if you can. The rules allow holding cards back, at the cost of a draw.
