When can you play a Wild Draw 4 in UNO?
Only if none of your other cards are in the current color, including a color someone chose with a Wild. Holding a card with the same number or symbol doesn't stop you; holding a card of that color does. You pick the new color, and the next player draws 4 and loses their turn.
The rule:
In UNO, you can play a Wild Draw 4 only if none of your other cards match the current color, including a color someone chose with a Wild. Holding a card that matches only by number or symbol doesn’t stop you.
| You hold a card that matches the discard pile’s… | Can you play Wild Draw 4? |
|---|---|
| Color | No |
| Number only | Yes |
| Symbol (action card) only | Yes |
| Nothing at all | Yes |
What it does: you choose the color that continues play, and the next player draws 4 cards and loses their turn.
At the start: if a Wild Draw 4 is turned up to begin the discard pile, put it back in the deck and turn over another card.
Example:
The top card is a blue 6. Mia holds a red 6, a yellow Skip and a Wild Draw 4, but nothing blue. She may play the Wild Draw 4, even though the red 6 would also have been playable.
Why players argue about it:
Players treat the Wild Draw 4 like a regular Wild and play it whenever they like. The color condition is the whole reason the card can be challenged.
