How we write rulings
RuleRef answers the rules questions that stop games. Each page answers one question, and every answer can be checked.
Our rules for rulings
- Answer first. The short answer comes before anything else.
- Checked against the rulebook. A person verifies every ruling against the official rules before it's published, and records the page.
- Our own words. We summarize rules; we don't copy rulebook text. Mechanics belong to everyone, but the rulebook's wording belongs to its publisher.
- We link, we don't host. Official rulebooks stay on the publisher's site.
- Editions matter. When a rule changed between editions, we say which edition each answer covers.
- We fix mistakes. Every page has a "Report an error" link and a "last checked" date.
