How does scoring work in UNO?
The first player to empty their hand scores points for every card left in their opponents' hands: number cards at face value, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip at 20, Wild Shuffle Hands and customizable cards at 40, and Wild and Wild Draw 4 at 50. The first player to reach 500 points wins.
The rule:
In UNO, whoever empties their hand first scores the cards left in opponents’ hands: number cards at face value, Draw Two, Reverse and Skip at 20, Wild Shuffle Hands and customizable cards at 40, and Wild and Wild Draw 4 at 50. The first player to 500 points wins.
| Card left in an opponent’s hand | Points |
|---|---|
| Number cards (0–9) | Face value |
| Draw Two, Reverse, Skip | 20 each |
| Wild Shuffle Hands, customizable cards | 40 each |
| Wild, Wild Draw 4 | 50 each |
Winning: keep playing rounds until someone reaches 500 points.
Alternative scoring: instead of the winner collecting points, everyone adds up the cards stuck in their own hand after each round and adds that to their own total; the round winner adds 0. As soon as anyone’s total hits 500, the game ends and the lowest total wins. For example, after three rounds at 410, 220 and 505, the player on 220 wins.
Example:
Kai goes out. Ana holds a 7 and a Skip (27 points) and Mia holds a Wild (50 points). Kai scores 77 for the round.
Why players argue about it:
Groups that play single rounds never see the point values, and those that keep score often miss the sheet's second scoring method.
