What happens if you forget to say UNO?
If you don't call "UNO" when you play your second-to-last card and another player catches you before the next player begins their turn, you draw 2 cards. Once the next player has started their turn, it's too late to catch you.
The rule:
In UNO, if you forget to call UNO as you play your second-to-last card and another player catches you before the next player begins their turn, you draw 2 cards; once that turn has started, it’s too late to catch you.
- When to call it: as you play your second-to-last card, leaving you with one.
- The catch window: from that moment until the next player begins their turn.
- The penalty: draw 2 cards from the draw pile.
- Too late: once the next player has started their turn, you can no longer be caught for that card. The sheet doesn’t define the exact moment a turn begins; most groups treat it as the next player playing or drawing a card.
Example:
Kai plays his second-to-last card and stays quiet. Mia points it out before the next player begins their turn, so Kai draws 2 and now holds 3 cards.
Why players argue about it:
Groups argue about when the window closes and what the penalty is. The window ends when the next player starts their turn, and the penalty is 2 cards.
