Can you pay 2 food instead of 1 in Wingspan?
Yes. When you play a bird, any 2 food tokens can count as 1 food of any type. So if a bird needs a fish and you have none, you can pay any 2 other food tokens instead.
The rule:
Yes, in Wingspan any 2 food tokens can be paid as 1 food of any type when you play a bird, so if a bird needs a fish and you have none, 2 other food tokens can cover it.
To play a bird you pay its food cost using tokens next to your player mat.
- 2-for-1: when playing birds, any 2 food tokens can be spent as 1 food of any type.
- Wild food: a wild icon in the cost accepts any of the 5 food types.
- “Or” costs: a slash means pay either food shown.
- Cached food doesn’t count: food cached on your birds is worth points but can’t be spent.
If you can’t pay the full cost, including the egg cost for that column, you can’t play the bird.
Example:
Kai wants to play a bird that costs 1 fish and 1 seed. He has 1 seed, 1 fruit and 1 rodent. He pays the seed, then the fruit and rodent together count as the fish.
Why players argue about it:
It's one line in the rules, and many players learn the game without it. It only applies to paying a bird's food cost.
