When can you reroll the birdfeeder in Wingspan?
If every die in the birdfeeder shows the same face, including when only 1 die is left, you may reroll all 5 dice before gaining food. If the feeder is empty, you must throw all 5 dice back in.
The rule:
In Wingspan, you may reroll all 5 birdfeeder dice before gaining food only if every die in the feeder shows the same face, even when just 1 die is left; if the feeder is empty, you must throw all 5 back in.
The birdfeeder holds 5 food dice. Dice you take stay out until the feeder is refilled.
- Empty feeder: throw all 5 dice back in.
- All dice show the same face: before you gain food from the feeder for any reason, you may throw all 5 dice back in. This includes when only 1 die is left.
- The split face (invertebrate or seed) counts as its own face.
Each die gives exactly 1 food token. The split face gives one food of either type, not both.
Example:
Two dice are left in the feeder and both show fish. Ben wants seed, so before taking food he throws all 5 dice back into the tower.
Why players argue about it:
Groups reroll whenever they don't like the dice, or forget that a single die left counts as all the same face. The split invertebrate/seed face counts as its own face.
