Do bird powers activate when you play the bird in Wingspan?

Only whiteShort answer

Only white "when played" powers. Brown powers don't fire when you play the bird. They activate later, each time you take that habitat's action, from right to left. Playing a bird never activates a row.

The rule:

In Wingspan, only a bird’s white “when played” power activates when you play it. Brown powers activate later, each time you take that habitat’s action, from right to left, and playing a bird never activates a row.

  • When you play a bird: only its white “when played” power can be used. Brown and pink powers are ignored.
  • Brown powers: when you take the Gain Food (forest), Lay Eggs (grassland) or Draw Cards (wetland) action, first take the slot’s benefit, then move your cube right to left and activate each brown power in that row.
  • All powers are optional. You can skip any of them.

Playing a bird is the only action that doesn’t activate a row of birds.

Example:

Kai plays a forest bird with a brown power. Nothing happens yet. Next turn he takes the gain-food action, and the power can activate as his cube moves left across the forest row.

Why players argue about it:

It feels natural to use a new bird right away. Brown powers are deliberately delayed, which is what makes building up a row worthwhile.
