How do you get out of jail in Monopoly?
Pay $50 at the start of your next turn, use a Get Out of Jail Free card, or roll a double. You get up to three turns to roll a double; if your third roll still isn't a double, you pay $50 and move with that roll.
The rule:
In Monopoly, you leave Jail by paying $50 at the start of your next turn, using a Get Out of Jail Free card, or rolling a double within three turns.
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Pay $50 | Pay at the start of your next turn, then roll and move as normal |
| Get Out of Jail Free card | Use it at the start of your next turn (you can buy one from another player), put it at the bottom of its deck, then roll and move |
| Roll a double | Move with that roll; your turn then ends, with no extra roll for the double |
Three tries for a double: if your third attempt isn’t a double, you pay $50 and move with that same roll.
Staying in on purpose: you can choose to roll for doubles instead of paying, which keeps you in Jail, but only for up to three turns. After the third miss you have to pay.
Getting sent there: landing on Go To Jail sends you straight to the In Jail space without collecting money for passing GO, and your turn ends. So does rolling three doubles in a row.
Example:
Leo is in Jail and tries for a double. He misses on his first two turns. On his third he rolls a 4 and a 2, so he pays $50 and moves 6 spaces.
Why players argue about it:
Players argue over whether a double gets you a second roll, whether you can stay in Jail on purpose, and what happens after three failed tries.
