Official ruleMonopoly classic (Hasbro C1009, 2021 rules)
Do you have to pay rent in Monopoly if the owner doesn't ask?
NoShort answer
No. The owner has to ask you for the rent. Once the next player has rolled, the chance to collect is gone. That applies to every owned property: streets, stations (railroads) and utilities.
The rule:
In Monopoly, rent is only owed if the owner asks for it before the next player rolls the dice; once that roll happens, the rent is lost.
How rent works:
- You land on a property someone else owns.
- The owner must ask you for the rent.
- If they ask, you must pay.
- If they haven’t asked by the time the next player rolls, you don’t pay.
What you pay:
- Streets: the rent on the Title Deed card, doubled for an unbuilt street if the owner has the whole color set, or more with houses and hotels.
- Stations (railroads): depends on how many stations the owner has.
- Utilities: roll the dice; the rent is 4 times the roll if the owner has one utility, 10 times if they have both.
Example:
Ben lands on Ana's station while she's busy counting her money. The next player rolls before Ana notices, so Ben is off the hook.
Why players argue about it:
Some players think rent is owed no matter what, or that a player should point it out themselves. The rules put the job on the owner.
