Can you collect rent while in jail in Monopoly?
Yes. Jail keeps your piece put until you get out, but your business carries on from your cell: collecting rent, bidding in auctions, building houses and hotels, mortgaging and trading are all allowed.
The rule:
In Monopoly, you can still collect rent while you’re in Jail, and you can also bid in auctions, build, mortgage and trade; you just can’t move.
What you can do in Jail:
| Action | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Collect rent | Yes |
| Bid in auctions | Yes |
| Buy houses and hotels | Yes |
| Mortgage property | Yes |
| Make trades | Yes |
| Move around the board | No |
Still ask for it: like any rent, you have to ask before the next player rolls, or you lose it.
Example:
Mia is in Jail when Leo lands on her street with three houses. She asks for the rent before the next player rolls, and Leo has to pay her in full.
Why players argue about it:
A popular house rule says jailed players can't collect rent. The official rules let you carry on doing business from your cell.
