Do your routes have to connect in Ticket to Ride?
No. You can claim any open route on the board, anywhere on the map. Connections only matter for scoring: a ticket counts only if an unbroken line of your own trains links both of its cities.
The rule:
In Ticket to Ride, your routes don’t have to connect: you can claim any open route anywhere on the map, but a ticket only counts if an unbroken line of your own trains links both of its cities.
A few related rules people mix up:
- One route per turn. Claiming a route is your whole turn.
- The whole route at once. You can’t claim part of a route and finish it later.
- Tickets need a connection. A ticket only counts if a continuous path of your own trains joins both cities on it. Routes on their own score their points when you claim them.
Example:
Ben's trains are all in the east. He claims a route in the far west to block Ana from her ticket. That's legal, even though it doesn't connect to anything he owns.
Why players argue about it:
Many players think it works like Catan, where roads must connect. In Ticket to Ride, building elsewhere to block an opponent is a normal tactic.
