Can you use a premium square twice in Scrabble?

NoShort answer

No. A premium square only counts on the turn a tile is first placed on it. After that it's a normal square, so later words that use that tile score it at face value. A letter on a premium square does count twice if it forms two words that same turn.

The rule:

In Scrabble, a premium square only boosts your score on the turn a tile is first placed on it; after that, it scores like an ordinary square.

How premium squares work:

  • One use only: once a tile covers it, the square stops being premium.
  • Two words, one turn: if a tile on a premium square is part of two words you form that turn, count it, with its bonus, in both words.
  • Letters first, then words: add up the letters, including any letter bonuses, then double or triple the whole word.
  • Two word squares in one word: two double word squares multiply the word by 4; two triple word squares multiply it by 9.

Example:

Cy covers a double word square with the last letter of his word. Next turn, Dee adds letters to the end of Cy's word and scores the whole longer word. Cy's square now counts at face value; only premium squares under Dee's new tiles count.

Why players argue about it:

Players often keep counting a premium square every time a new word passes through it. The rules say a square's bonus is used up once a tile sits on it.
