Scrabble Classic (Hasbro F4204, 2021 rules) · Checked against the rulebook, Oct 2026

In short

Draw seven letter tiles and build words crossword-style on the board. Every tile has a point value, and colored squares double or triple a letter or a whole word. Empty your full rack in a single play for a 50-point bonus. At the end, leftover letters count against you; the highest score wins.

1

Setup

  1. 1Open the board and put all 100 tiles in the bag. Choose a scorekeeper.
  2. 2Everyone takes a rack and draws one tile. Whoever draws the letter earliest in the alphabet starts, and a blank wins outright. Play then goes clockwise.
  3. 3Put those tiles back. In turn order, each player draws 7 tiles onto their rack, keeping them hidden.
  4. 4Keep a dictionary handy for challenges. The rules recommend The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary by Merriam-Webster.

How a turn works

Play a word

Place tiles in one straight line, across or down. The first word needs 2 or more letters and must cover the center square; after that, new tiles must join tiles already on the board. Every string of touching letters must be a real word.

Score

Add up every word you formed or changed, counting any premium squares you just covered. Using all 7 tiles adds a 50-point bonus.

Refill

Draw back up to 7 tiles.

Or exchange or pass

Instead of playing a word, you can swap some or all of your tiles, or skip your turn. You score nothing for the turn.

How to win

Highest final score

The game ends when the bag is empty and someone plays their last tile, or when every player passes twice in turn. Then adjust scores:
