Do you get 50 points for using all 7 tiles in Scrabble?
Yes. If you play all seven tiles from your rack in one turn, you score 50 points on top of your word score. The 50 comes on top of your word score, which already includes premium squares, so the bonus itself isn't doubled or tripled. Going out with fewer than seven tiles doesn't earn it.
The rule:
In Scrabble, playing all seven tiles from your rack in one turn earns a 50-point bonus on top of that turn’s word score, but going out with fewer than seven tiles doesn’t.
When you get it:
- All seven tiles, one turn: every tile on your rack goes onto the board in a single play.
- Joining the board is fine: your seven tiles can build on letters that are already there.
How it’s added: the rules add the 50 on top of your word score. Your word score already includes any premium squares, so work that out first, then add 50; the bonus itself isn’t multiplied.
Not a bingo: near the end of the game, when the bag is empty, you may have fewer than seven tiles. Playing your last four, say, empties your rack but doesn’t use seven tiles, so there’s no 50-point bonus.
Example:
Lena places all seven of her tiles in a word that scores 22 after a double word square. She adds the 50-point bonus for a 72-point turn.
Why players argue about it:
Players argue over whether the 50 points get doubled by a premium square, and whether emptying a short rack at the end of the game counts.
