How do unfinished cities and roads score at the end of Carcassonne?
At the end, unfinished roads score 1 point per tile as usual. Unfinished cities score only 1 point per tile and 1 per coat of arms, half their normal value. Unfinished monasteries score 1 point plus 1 per surrounding tile.
The rule:
At the end of Carcassonne, unfinished roads still score 1 point per tile, but unfinished cities drop to half value, 1 point per tile and 1 per coat of arms, and unfinished monasteries score 1 point plus 1 per surrounding tile.
The game ends when the last tile is placed. Then every meeple still on the board scores:
| Feature | Final scoring |
|---|---|
| Unfinished road | 1 point per tile |
| Unfinished city | 1 point per tile + 1 per coat of arms |
| Unfinished monastery | 1 point + 1 per surrounding tile |
| Field | 3 points per completed city it touches |
The majority rule still applies: the player with the most meeples on a feature scores it.
Example:
Ana has a knight in an unfinished city of 4 tiles with 2 coats of arms. At the end she scores 6 points. Finished, the same city would have been worth 12.
Why players argue about it:
Groups forget that unfinished features score at all, or score unfinished cities at full value. Only cities are halved. Roads and monasteries score the same either way.
