What if you can't place your tile in Carcassonne?

Draw againShort answer

If the tile you drew can't be placed anywhere so that it continues the landscape, put it back in the box and draw a new tile.

The rule:

In Carcassonne, if the tile you drew can’t be placed anywhere that continues the landscape, return it to the box, draw a new tile and take your normal turn with that one instead.

Every tile you place must continue the landscape: roads join roads, cities join cities and fields join fields along every edge it touches.

It’s rare, but sometimes a tile fits nowhere. In that case:

  1. Return it to the box. It’s out of the game.
  2. Draw a new tile and place that one instead.

You still take a normal turn with the new tile, including placing a meeple and scoring.

Example:

Late in the game, Kai draws a tile with cities on three sides. No open spot on the table matches. He returns it to the box and draws another.

Why players argue about it:

Some groups shuffle it back into the stack or skip the turn. The rulebook removes it from the game instead.
