Can you place a meeple on any tile in Carcassonne?
No. You may only place a meeple on the tile you just placed that turn, and only on a feature with no other meeple on it. Placing a meeple is optional, and you can place at most one per turn.
The rule:
No, in Carcassonne you can only place a meeple on the tile you just placed, on a feature that has no meeple on it yet; placing one is optional, and you can place at most one per turn.
A turn has three steps, in order:
- Place a land tile. Draw exactly 1 tile and place it so it continues the landscape.
- Place a meeple (optional). Put 1 meeple from your supply on a road, city, monastery or field on that tile.
- Score. Score every feature your tile completed.
The feature you choose can’t already have a meeple anywhere on it, counting all connected tiles.
Example:
Mia notices an empty road elsewhere on the table. She can't put a meeple there. She can only use a feature on the tile she just placed.
Why players argue about it:
New players try to reach back to an older tile when they see a good spot. The rule keeps meeple placement tied to the tile you just played.
