Can you put tiles in a pattern line if that wall row already has their color in Azul?

NoShort answer

No. You can't place tiles of a color in a pattern line if the matching row of your wall already has that color. A pattern line that already holds tiles also only takes more of the same color.

The rule:

No: in Azul, a pattern line can’t take a color that is already filled in the matching row of your wall, and a pattern line that already holds tiles accepts only more of that same color.

When you add tiles to a pattern line, two rules apply:

  • One color per line. If the line already holds tiles, you can only add more of that color.
  • No repeats on the wall. You can’t use a color whose space in the matching wall row is already filled.

If no pattern line can legally take your tiles, they all go to your floor line. Tiles fill a pattern line from right to left, and any that don’t fit also drop to the floor.

Example:

Your fourth wall row already has its black space filled. You take 4 black tiles. They can't go in your fourth pattern line, but they can go in any other pattern line that's empty or already black, as long as that row of your wall has no black yet.

Why players argue about it:

It's easy to forget once your wall starts filling up, and it can force a whole handful of tiles onto your floor line.
