How do you score a tile placed on your wall in Azul?
A tile with no neighbors scores 1. Otherwise, if it has horizontal neighbors, count the unbroken row it joins, including itself. If it has vertical neighbors, count the unbroken column it joins, including itself. Add the two together. A tile that joins both counts itself twice.
The rule:
In Azul, a new wall tile with no neighbors scores 1 point. Otherwise, count the unbroken row it joins if it has horizontal neighbors and the unbroken column if it has vertical ones, including the tile itself each time, and add them.
Score each tile the moment it moves onto your wall:
| The new tile touches… | You score |
|---|---|
| Nothing | 1 point |
| Only tiles in its row | Every tile in that unbroken row, including the new one |
| Only tiles in its column | Every tile in that unbroken column, including the new one |
| Both | The row count plus the column count |
“Unbroken” means the tiles are linked with no gaps. A tile further along the row, past an empty space, doesn’t count.
Tiles move to the wall from top to bottom, so a tile placed earlier in the same round can add to the next one’s score.
Example:
You place a black tile. In its row, there are 2 tiles directly to its left in an unbroken run and nothing to its right. In its column, there's 1 tile directly below and nothing above. The row gives 3 points and the column gives 2, so the black tile scores 5.
Why players argue about it:
Players often count the new tile only once when it joins both a row and a column, or count only the tiles touching it instead of the whole connected line.
