Can you put tiles straight into your floor line in Azul?

YesShort answer

Yes. Any tiles you can't place, or choose not to place, go into your floor line, filling it from left to right. They cost points at the end of wall- tiling, but sometimes that's better than ruining a pattern line.

The rule:

Yes, in Azul you can put tiles straight into your floor line, either because you choose to or because they can’t fit anywhere else; they fill it from left to right and cost points at the end of wall-tiling.

Tiles go to your floor line in three situations:

  • Overflow: you took more tiles than your chosen pattern line has room for.
  • Nowhere legal: no pattern line can take that color (see the color rule).
  • Your choice: you’d rather take the penalty than put the tiles in a pattern line.

Floor tiles fill the line from left to right. Each space has a penalty printed above it, applied at the end of wall-tiling. Once every space is taken, any further tiles go to the box lid.

Example:

Mia takes 4 black tiles. Her only open pattern line is the fifth, which she's saving for blue. Rather than block it, she puts all 4 black tiles on her floor line and takes the penalty.

Why players argue about it:

Players assume the floor line is only for overflow. The rules let you choose it, which matters late in a round when the only tiles left would block your plans.
