Where can you put the Exploding Kitten back after a Defuse?

AnywhereShort answer

Anywhere you like in the draw pile, in secret: on top, on the bottom or anywhere in between. You can't look at or rearrange the other cards while you do it. Then your turn is over, with no extra draw.

The rule:

In Exploding Kittens, after a Defuse you can put the Exploding Kitten back anywhere in the draw pile, in secret: top, bottom or in between. You can’t look at or rearrange the other cards, and your turn ends with no extra draw.

Putting the Kitten back:

  • Anywhere: any position in the draw pile, including the very top or the bottom.
  • In secret: others shouldn’t see where it goes, so shield the deck or turn away while you do it.
  • No peeking: you can’t look at or reorder the other cards while you do it.
  • Turn over: your Defuse goes on the discard pile and your turn ends. You don’t draw another card.

Why it matters: you now know exactly where one Kitten is, and nobody else does. It’s a real chance to set a trap.

Example:

Tomás defuses a Kitten. He suspects Jo will play See the Future next, so he tucks the Kitten fifth from the top, out of everyone's view, where a peek at the top 3 won't find it.

Why players argue about it:

Players argue over whether the Kitten has to be shuffled in randomly, whether others can watch where it goes, and whether you draw again afterwards.
