Do you have to play a card on your turn in Exploding Kittens?

NoShort answer

No. You can play as many cards as you like, or none, before drawing. What you can't skip is the draw at the end of your turn, unless a card such as a Skip or an Attack ends your turn for you. There's no hand-size limit either.

The rule:

In Exploding Kittens, you don’t have to play a card: you can play any number of cards or none before drawing, but you can’t skip the draw that ends your turn unless a card like a Skip or an Attack ends it for you.

Your turn:

  1. Play or pass: play any number of cards, one after another, or none.
  2. Draw: take the top card of the draw pile. That ends your turn.

Ending a turn without drawing: only a card that says so, such as a Skip or an Attack, lets you do that.

Hand size: there’s no maximum or minimum. An empty hand is fine: keep taking turns and drawing as normal.

Strategy: holding cards back in the opening rounds is usually smart, since the deck is still big and a Kitten is less likely. Knowing how many cards are left tells you roughly how risky each draw is.

Example:

Early in the game, Priya holds a Shuffle, a Favor and three Cat Cards. She plays nothing and just draws, saving her cards for later, when the deck holds fewer safe cards.

Why players argue about it:

New players often think they must play a card each turn, or that they can end a turn without drawing. Neither is right.
