Are rhyming or soundalike clues allowed in Codenames?
Not in the standard rules. A clue has to be about a word's meaning, so a word that only sounds like a card doesn't count, unless the link really is about meaning, for example because the two form a common phrase. Your group can agree to allow all soundalikes, the way the Codenames app does.
The rule:
In Codenames, rhyming or soundalike clues aren’t allowed under the standard rules, because clues must be about meaning, unless the link really is about meaning, such as a common phrase. Your group can agree to allow all soundalikes, as the app does.
Standard rule: clues must point to meanings, not sounds.
- A word that just sounds like a card isn’t valid.
- A soundalike is fine when it’s part of a common phrase that connects the meanings.
- House rule: your group can agree to allow all soundalikes, as the app does.
Spelling:
- Spelling your clue is allowed, and required if anyone asks.
- Words spelled the same count as the same word, even if they’re said differently. Bow can point to both ARROW and SHIP.
Example:
SEA is on the table. See isn't a valid clue for it, because it only sounds the same. Wave or salt is fine, because those are about what sea means.
Why players argue about it:
The Codenames app allows every soundalike, so players who learned online bring that habit to the table. The printed rules are stricter unless your group agrees otherwise.
