Can you guess a word from an earlier clue in Codenames?

YesShort answer

Yes. Operatives can guess words left over from a previous clue at any point in their turn, including the very first guess, but only one extra guess is allowed. The plus-one guess is often used for this, but the spymaster can't remind you which words you missed.

The rule:

In Codenames, yes: operatives can guess a word left over from an earlier clue at any point in their turn, even on the first guess, but it counts toward the usual limit of the clue’s number plus one, and the spymaster can’t remind you which words you missed.

  • Any guess can use an old clue, including your first guess of the turn.
  • Counting still applies: with a standard clue you get its number plus one guesses, and a wrong guess still ends your turn.
  • The spymaster stays quiet: they can’t point out leftover words or bring up old clues, but they can repeat a clue if you ask.

Example:

Last turn the clue was music: 3 and Kai's team found only 2. This turn the clue is snow: 1. They guess the snow word, then use their extra guess on the last music word.

Why players argue about it:

Players often think every guess must fit the current clue. It doesn't, but the spymaster also can't hint that you're missing words from before.
