Do card bonuses count as gems in Splendor?
No. Each Development card you own gives a permanent discount of 1 gem of its color on future purchases. Bonuses aren't pieces: they can't be spent, don't count toward the 10-piece limit, and if they exceed a card's cost you don't get anything back.
The rule:
In Splendor, card bonuses don’t count as gems: each Development card you own is a permanent discount of 1 gem of its color on future purchases, so bonuses can’t be spent, don’t count toward the 10-piece limit, and give no change.
How a bonus works: each Development card shows a gem in its corner. That’s its color and its bonus: 1 gem of that color off every future purchase.
What bonuses can do:
- reduce the cost of a card, even to zero
- meet a noble’s requirement
What they can’t do:
- give you pieces, or change when they exceed the cost
- count toward the 10-piece limit
- be spent like gems on anything else
Example:
A card costs 3 emeralds and 1 sapphire. Mia owns 4 green cards and 1 blue card, so her bonuses cover the whole cost. She buys it for free, but the extra green bonus doesn't give her an emerald.
Why players argue about it:
New players try to take a gem for each bonus, or expect change when bonuses cover more than the cost. Bonuses only ever reduce what you pay.
