In Clue, does everyone show you a card, or only the first player who can?

Only the firstShort answer

Only the first. Players try to disprove your suggestion one at a time, starting on your left. As soon as one of them shows you a card, it stops there, and nobody further around the table shows anything.

The rule:

In Clue, only the first player who can disprove your suggestion shows you a card: players check one at a time, starting on your left, and once someone shows a card, nobody further around the table shows anything.

The order: start with the player on the suggester’s left, then keep going left until someone can show a card.

Where it stops: at the first player who shows a card. Cross it off on your notebook, and your turn ends.

If nobody can disprove it: you can end your turn or make an accusation straight away. Careful: if you named one of your own cards, nobody could show it, so it’s in your hand, not the envelope.

Keep good notes: writing down who showed you each card helps you read later suggestions too.

Example:

Dana makes a suggestion. Eli, on her left, has none of the cards and says so. Fay has two of them and shows Dana one. Greg never has to check his hand, even though he might hold the third.

Why players argue about it:

Some groups go all the way around the table, which hands out far more information than the rules intend.
