Can you trade during the build phase in Catan?
In the current 6th edition, yes. After you roll, you can trade and build as often as you like, in any order. In the older 5th edition the standard rules say no: trading comes first, then building, unless you use the optional combined phase.
The rule
In the 6th edition (2025), a turn has two phases:
- Production phase: you may play a development card, then roll and everyone collects resources (or you resolve a 7).
- Action phase: trade and build as often as you like and in any order, as long as you can pay.
So you can build, trade, then build again. You can even build a settlement on a port and use that port in the same turn.
5th edition: the standard turn is roll, then trade, then build, in that order, so you can’t trade once you’ve started building. Its almanac offers a combined trade/build phase and recommends it for experienced players. That optional rule is how the 6th edition now works by default.
Example
Ana rolls a 6 and collects ore. She builds a road, then trades Ben 1 wool for 1 brick and builds a settlement. That's fine in the 6th edition. Under the 5th edition's standard rules she couldn't trade after building.
Why players argue about it
The rule changed. The 6th edition (2025) merged trading and building into one Action phase. Players who learned with the 5th edition remember separate phases, and both groups are right for their own box.
