Can you build a settlement in the middle of an opponent's road in Catan?

If you connectShort answer

Yes, if one of your own roads reaches that empty intersection and the distance rule allows a settlement there. Building on it cuts their road in two, which can cost them Longest Road. Their road alone doesn't count: your settlement must connect to a road of yours.

The rule:

Yes, in Catan you can build a settlement in the middle of an opponent’s road if your own road reaches that empty intersection and the distance rule allows it, which splits their road in two for Longest Road.

You can build there when all of these are true:

  1. The corner is empty: no settlement or city on it. Someone else’s road passing through doesn’t make it theirs.
  2. Your road reaches it: every new settlement has to connect to at least one of your own roads. Their road alone isn’t enough.
  3. The distance rule holds: none of the three neighbouring corners has a building, yours or anyone else’s.

What happens to their road: it’s split at your settlement. For Longest Road, each piece counts separately, so a long road can suddenly become two short ones.

Why it’s a big move: it’s the main way to take Longest Road away from someone without out-building them. Watch for open corners along your own longest road, and close them with your own settlements if you can.

Can they build past your new settlement? No. Like any opponent’s building, it blocks their road from continuing on the far side.

Example:

Kai has a 6-road stretch. Ana's road reaches an empty corner partway along it, with no buildings on the corners next to it. She builds a settlement there, and Kai's stretch is now a 2-road piece and a 4-road piece.

Why players argue about it:

Players often think a road claims the corners it passes through. It doesn't: any empty intersection along it is open to whoever can legally connect to it.
